Long News Articles
These articles are no more than five pages in length.
They are about information gathered through interviews with one or more
persons, from the Internet, and from real life events. These articles
should be supported strongly with quotes and should not reflect the bias
of the writer; the reader should never know what the writer's opinion is.
Always cite all sources.
Editorials
These articles are three to five pages in length. They
reflect the bias of the writer and do not necessarily contain quotes.
However, a good writer conducts fair and thorough research before sharing
his/her opinions. Always cite all sources.
Feature Articles
These articles are three to five pages in length.
Whether featuring a person, a place, etc., good research and many quotes
carry the story. Always cite all sources.
Interview a Professional
This article should be three to five pages in length.
Good research and quotes should carry the story. The student should select
a professional in his/her own field of interest or major and request an
appointment for the interview. Be sure to list at least 10 questions
before the interview. The professional should be someone who has the kind
of job the student would like to have. Students say this is one of the
most beneficial assignments in the course. Always cite all sources.
Broadcast PSAs
These Public Service Announcements (PSA) are 30-seconds
(7.5 lines) and 60-seconds (15 lines) in length. The subject is the choice
of the student but should be about something real (e.g., The Salvation
Army, Boy Scouts, etc.). Because broadcast copy is written for the ear
instead of the eye, the instructor will review specific style differences
compared to writing for print. Always cite all sources.
Broadcast Script
These Scripts are to be at least five minutes (75 lines)
in length. The subject is the choice of the student and may be fictitious.
Always cite all
sources.
