bullet

In the upper left corner of the first page, include the writer's name, due date, slugline (no more than a three-word description of the story), and word count.

bullet

Always double space the body of the article.

bullet

The first sentence in each paragraph should not be tabbed or indented. Instead, please include an extra line between paragraphs.

bullet

Hit the space bar once, not twice, after periods or colons.

bullet

Place attribution after quotes instead of before. Here's an example:

"Quotes add credibility and strength to articles, and we should see the first quote in about the third sentence," says Paula Dixon, faculty advisor for Emmanuel Columns newspaper.

bullet

On the last page of the story, even if the last page is also the first, type "###" without quotation marks to indicate the end of the story.

bullet

Learn to compose at the keyboard. Do not write stories by hand and then type them.

bullet

Avoid writing in passive voice. Construct sentences in this order: subject-verb-object (SVO).
