Descriptions of Speeches

All Speeches

bulletPrepare and test all technology before the speech.
bulletHandouts are allowed only after the speech unless the audience needs to complete forms or write answers during the speech.

Speech 1: It's all about me

This five-minute speech is all about you. Tell us about yourself and your interests. A brief Q&A session will follow the speech.

bulletPowerPoint--required. Minimum of 10 slides including a title slide, a preview of the main points, a recap of the main points, and a final thought slide.
bulletOther media is permitted.

Speech 2: Allow me to demonstrate

This is a five-minute demonstration speech. You must demonstrate a process. For example, how to change a tire, make a cake, etc. Visuals should represent the steps involved.

bulletPowerPoint--required. Minimum of 10 slides including a title slide, a preview of the main points, a recap of the main points, and a final thought slide.
bulletOther media is permitted.

Speech 3: Teacher for the day

This is a 7-minute teaching speech. You must teach us how to do something or how to understand something. Research is key in this speech, and at least five sources are required. Do your homework--your credibility is on the line.

bulletPowerPoint--required. Minimum of 15 slides including a title slide, a preview of the main points, a recap of the main points, and a final thought slide.
bulletOther media is permitted.

Speech 4: Biography

This is a 10-minute narrative speech. You must tell us about the life of a significant person in your life or someone else's life. Include information about that person and how s/he has impacted you.

bulletOutline--required (see sample) and due two weeks before the speech.
bulletPowerPoint--required. Minimum of 12 slides including a title slide, a preview of the main points, a recap of the main points, and a final thought slide.
bulletOther media is required.

Speech 5: DS Speech

This is a 10-minute speech based on a topic of your choice. It will include a 3-minute Digital Story (DS), which is a photo essay presented as a digital story. The DS must be created using MS PhotoStory or iMovie.

bullet3-minute written script--required and due two weeks before the speech (no outline is required).
bulletPowerPoint--required. Minimum of 5 slides including a title slide, description of event, why this event was chosen, a preview of the main points (what is the angle; what is the purpose?), a recap of the main points, and a final thought slide.
bullet PhotoStory--required.
bulletOther media is permitted.

Speech 6: It's up to you

This is a 15-minute speech of your choice. As with Speech 6, submit your proposal via e-mail at least two weeks before the speech for the instructor's approval.

bulletPowerPoint--required. Minimum of 15 slides including a title slide, a preview of the main points, a recap of the main points, and a final thought slide.
bulletOther media is permitted and strongly encouraged.

Final DS Speech - Service Learning Experience

This is a 3-minute digital story based on the student's own experience with a service learning project at EC. It will be a photo essay presented as a digital story. It is meant to stand alone; it will not have a live introduction or conclusion.

bullet PhotoStory--required.

Time Requirements

All speeches will be timed. Speeches that end 30 seconds before or after the time requirement will not be penalized. The penalty schedule is below:

 0 points = 30 seconds before or after

-1 points = 31-60 seconds before or after

bullet

-2 points = 61-90 seconds before or after

bullet

-3 points = 91-120 seconds before or after

bullet

-5 points = 121-150 seconds before or after

bullet

-10 points = 150 or more seconds before or after

bullet

If speakers stop three or more minutes before the required time, the speech must be rescheduled and will receive a maximum grade of 80.
