Discussion (10%)This class is not lecture-based, it is discussion-based. That means you should come to class having read the assigned materials and prepared to share your thoughts and ideas with the rest of the class and to comment on others' thoughts and ideas. Students not prepared will be asked to leave and counted absent for that class meeting. While we do not wish to hear deep, dark secrets, we are all expected to share to a certain degree about personal experiences as they relate to the discussion topic. Reflection Papers (20%)The instructor will give 1-3 discussion questions to the class based on the assigned reading. These two-page papers are double spaced and should conform to APA style. Do not summarize what the book says; you may, however, refer to specific passages as needed. Papers may be submitted as Word attachments via e-mail or in hard copy. All papers are due at the beginning of class. If you should need a copy to refer to during class discussion, remember to print a copy for yourself. Lifeline Reflection Papers (15%)Based on the insights shared in the reflection papers, students will plot life experiences on a timeline, rate them, and relate them to aspects of their personalities. The instructor will expound on instructions in class. Dear Classmate (5%)By the time this assignment is due, you will have had ample opportunity to get to know everyone else in the class fairly well through class discussions. Based on that, you will write a short, anonymous letter to each of the other members of the class, including the instructor, and share with them
These will be submitted to the instructor, who will distribute the letters to ensure anonymity. The instructor will appoint a student to collect hers.
Group Seminars & Presentations (10%)
The instructor will select small groups (3-4 people per group) and assign topics to each. Each group will develop a 30-minute seminar on the assigned topic. Grading is based on research, application, innovation, presentation, and written work. See syllabus for more information.
Just an extra note here. Papers containing spelling or grammatical errors will not receive an A, regardless of how great the content might be. Do things like run spell check and take papers to EC's Writing Lab on the second floor in Aaron.
